Funeral insurance: so your family doesn’t have to worry about anything.

At such a hard time, the last thing a family needs is paperwork, urgent decisions and unexpected costs. Funeral insurance takes care of everything with a single phone call.

Funeral insurance (decesos)

What is it?

Funeral insurance, known in Spain as seguro de decesos, is one of the most widely held policies in the country. Its main purpose is to guarantee a complete funeral service when an insured person dies, organised and paid for by the insurer, not the family.

Today these policies go well beyond the funeral itself. They usually include handling paperwork, psychological support for relatives, legal advice and, very importantly if your family lives in another country, national or international repatriation.

For many people living far from their home country, repatriation is the cover that brings the most peace of mind: knowing that, if the worst happens, everything is planned and paid for.

What it usually covers

Complete funeral service

Coffin, funeral home, hearse, flowers, notice and ceremony, according to the sum insured.

Burial or cremation

The family’s choice, including cemetery or crematorium fees.

National transfer

From the place of death to the town the family chooses within Spain.

International repatriation

Transfer to the country of origin, key cover if your roots or family are outside Spain.

Paperwork

Certificates, Civil Registry, widow’s or orphan’s pension applications and administrative cancellations.

Family support

Psychological support, a ticket for a relative who needs to travel, and legal advice.

Services in life

Online wills, second medical opinion, digital legacy deletion or travel assistance, depending on the policy.

Exact cover, limits and conditions depend on each insurer and policy. I’ll explain them before you sign.

Types of premium

The main difference between funeral policies is how what you pay changes over the years.

Starts cheap

Natural premium

Recalculated each year based on your age. Starts low and rises over time.

More stable

Level premium

Stays more stable over the years. Often worth it if you start young and keep it long term.

Mixed premium

Combines both: rises with age up to a point, then stabilises.

Single premium

Pay once and the service is guaranteed. Common at older ages.

Real-life examples

Illustrative examples of how this insurance works day to day.

01

A single phone call

When Carmen’s father dies, she calls the insurer’s helpline. Funeral home, ceremony and paperwork are all arranged without the family paying anything upfront.

02

Repatriation to the home country

A family living in Valencia wants their loved one laid to rest in their home country. A policy with international transfer arranges and pays for the repatriation.

03

Widow’s pension

Besides the service, the insurer helps obtain the death certificate and apply for the widow’s pension.

It’s for you if…

  • You want to spare your family costs and paperwork at a very difficult time.
  • Your family or roots are in another country and you want repatriation guaranteed.
  • You want to include the whole family in one policy.
  • You’d like useful services during your lifetime too, like a will or assistance.

Before you sign, check this

  1. 01

    Sum insured

It should match the real cost of a funeral in your area and be updated over the years.

  2. 02

    Repatriation included

Not every policy covers international transfer, or every country. It’s the first thing we check if your family is abroad.

  3. 03

    How the premium evolves

Ask how it will rise with age. Comparing natural and level premiums long term avoids surprises.

  4. 04

    Who and what ages

Check the maximum age to join and whether, and until when, children are included.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I die far from home?

The insurer arranges the transfer to wherever your family chooses, within Spain or, if the policy includes it, abroad.

Can I insure my whole family?

Yes. A family policy covering your partner and children is common, sometimes other relatives too.

What if the service costs less than the sum insured?

Depending on the policy, the difference may be paid to the heirs. We check each insurer’s terms.

Is it better to take it out young?

Starting young usually means lower premiums, especially with a level premium. But it’s never too late to find the best option.
